10 Great Tips To Make A Good Impression At Your Interview

10 Great Tips To Make A Good Impression At Your

Interview

Some of you will be graduating soon and probably busy applying for your first job. How well do you think you'll perform at interview? It's a difficult thing for anyone at any level, and we'll try our best to guide you through some of the likely questions and situations you might find yourself having to deal with. As a veteran interviewee of more years than I care to mention, here's some advice I wish I'd had access to when I first started out.

1. First impressions

The obvious one – first impressions count! You have no idea how true this is.  Ask any psychologist. You need to smile and make sure you have a firm handshake without breaking anyone’s bones. Eye contact is vital so keep your gaze just a few seconds longer than usual, without looking like a lunatic.

2. Questions and answers

Let the interview committee lead the interview but remember that you don’t have to wait until the end of the interview to ask questions. While they’re telling you all about the job and the company, questions from you at this point will emphasise your interest in the position. They may start with the question “Tell us about yourself and your experience, and why you think you would be the best candidate for the job”. This is where it helps to have your elevator speech handy as a brief introduction to who you are and what you can do. Give examples of your technical and transferable skills and show how these will help you with aspects of the job.  Prepare stuff to recite when prompted – you'll find it a much easier process if you do this.

3. And again – your turn

Have questions ready to ask. It’s really important that you ask relevant questions about the job, the company, your prospects within the company… Show the panel that you’ve gone the extra mile and taken the time to find out that bit more about the company – it will definitely go in your favour. Sods Law dictates that they will answer your best question during the conversation, before you’ve had a chance to ask it, but don't worry about this all through the interview.  It's automatic to experience a feeling of dread at this point, when you think that you’re not going to have any killer questions to ask at the end.  But worrying about it only distracts you from the interview process, so if this happens, let it slide. Just remember to let the interview panel know that you were keen to ask a particular question, but they had already answered it earlier. It will also serve as a recap and you might be able to think of something else related to it on the spot.

4. Preparation

Before the interview (not the night before – do give this some thought) you should consider how you handle situations like interviews. A common question from an interviewer will be “What makes you nervous”? Have some idea of how you will answer this. They want to know how you handle stressful situations and an interview is a prime example. How will you answer a question like “What are your salary expectations”? A difficult one if you don’t know whether you are over or under selling yourself. Figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are – you need to be able to say what you’re good at and what you’re not so good at. But, do remember to add how you have overcome this weakness using an example e.g. nervous speaking in front of groups = attended a course on PowerPoint presentations/public speaking and am now much better at it!

5. Your reasons for wanting the job

Ask yourself why you want this job because you’ll likely be asked this on the day. Only you know the answer and you need to make it a good one. Just because you need a job isn’t a good enough reason for someone to hire you. Ask yourself what you actually know about the company. Are you interested in a long-term career or is this simply a stopgap for you? They might ask you where you see yourself in 6 months’ or 5 years’ time – how will you answer this. Easy if you see yourself long-term with the company, but not so easy to answer if you don’t.

6. Dress Code

To add to our recent article, “Got an Interview, What to Wear, What to Wear” make sure that you dress professionally. Casual is not good and gives the wrong impression. Of course, this will entirely depend on what type of job you are applying for, but for a professional career position, get it right and buy that killer suit.

7. Be enthusiastic!

You’ve been invited for interview because they believe you can do the job. It’s just down to you on the day to show that you can do it better than anyone else they might be interviewing. Even if you don’t tick all the boxes for the job criteria, I’ll bet you have something just as good or even better to offer. The interview panel don’t know this yet, so you have to tell them. Don’t be negative about a past (or present) employer, working conditions etc., as this will give a really bad impression. Try to show that you are flexible and willing to take on responsibility.

8. Timing is critical

Whatever happens don’t be late!  Arrive 10 minutes before – and if you're too early then take a walk around the block.  Just don’t leave it until 5 minutes before the interview is due to start, because the interview room might be some distance away from the reception area you have reported to. You don’t want to hurried up 3 flights of stairs and arrive out of breath and stressed.

9. No coffee stains please…

Sometimes, you might be required to take your references with you, so make sure you have these ready and in good condition in a folder. Don’t expect an interviewer to be impressed if you hand over evidence of your capabilities with coffee mug rings as your personal logo.

10. The evening before the interview

I’m not going to say try to relax the evening before because you won’t. If you really want the job you'll be pretty nervous. That’s natural – and that’s the best advice anyone can give, to just be natural and be yourself. That’s the person they’re looking for. Good Luck!

How to Perform Well in Interviews

How to Perform Well in Interviews

Here’s an interesting fact that isn’t always discussed: sometimes, the person who gets the job isn’t the person who is right for the job; the person who gets the job is the person who is best at job interviews. Read this paragraph again and don’t forget it.

Steps

  1. Ace a Management Interview Step 6.jpg
    1
Be confident from the start. Your application was plucked out of many and considered one of the best. It will have taken them considerable resources to pick through the applicants searching for the right candidate. Before you even get there you know that your foot’s in the door. Things are in you favor; don’t forget that as you prepare.
  2. Create a Job Skills Development Plan Step 3.jpg
    2
Do some research on the company. (Google is your best friend here). Look at the company’s mission statement on their website. What is it that is driving them; what are their core aims; what is the ethos of the company? Remember, you are looking to fit this mould.
  3. Fight Burnout at Work Step 10.jpg
    3
Remember the Job Description and the Person Specification? Dig them out. Get to know them again; they’re old friends. In the Application Form section we looked at how these documents tell you what the company is looking for. Revisit these documents. The mould is there for you to fit.
  4. Fight Burnout at Work Step 1.jpg
    4
Remember how you copied your application form before you submitted it; go over it now and be familiar with it. The last thing you want is to see the interview each member of the interview panel with a copy of an application form you sent to them two months ago, the details of which you have no memory of. If you’ve been generous with the truth, keeping a copy of your application form will have saved your bacon. Take all your notes with you on the day. You may have time for revision

Method 1 of 5: Dealing with nerves

  1. Impress Your Much Older Boss Step 2.jpg
    1
Expect nerves but also expect support. In many instances you’re going to be terrified. But that’s okay. It’s a job interview. The interviewer knows you’re nervous but they want you to do well. They’ve invested a lot of company time in recruiting. They want you to shine. There is nothing worse for an interviewer to see a dazzling application form and call someone for interview only to watch them fall to pieces before their eyes. Again: they want you to do well. Remember this.
  2. Perform Well in Interviews Step 6.jpg
    2
See the interview as an examination. Treat it as such and revise. You want to be ahead of everyone else that applied. Your competition will not have prepared as meticulously as you have. This is your advantage.
  3. Perform Well in Interviews Step 7.jpg
    3
If you’re nervous, take time to relax. Focus on your breathing while you wait. This can be more useful than revision. If you can relax a little you’ll think on your feet.
  4. Ace a Management Interview Step 9.jpg
    4
Pay attention to your surroundings, this could pay off in more ways than you think.

Method 2 of 5: The Interview Question

  1. Communicate Effectively in a Job Interview Step 8.jpg
    1
Calm yourself. Because you will be feeling nervous your mind will be running on double-time. Take your time. Breathe. Think about your answers. Rather take your time and give the right answer than rush and talk nonsense.
  2. Ace a Management Interview Step 4.jpg
    2
Know the answer to the fundamental interview question. The fundamental purpose of the interview is to ask one simple thing: “Why should we give you a job?” Good question. And why should they? You need to let them know that you are passionate:
    • “…I enjoy working with people.”
    • “…I have a great respect for this company.”
    • “…I have always been passionate about…”
    • It’s fine if you have lifted these ready-made-phrases directly from your application form because that will show consistency.
  3. Deal With Working With Someone Who Doesn't Like You Step 5.jpg
    3
Try visualization to overcome nerves. If you get nervous you may talk nonsense. Imagine your answers as aiming at a bullseye on a darts board: if you aren’t hitting the bullseye you’re wasting your time. You have two options if you start to talk nonsense: first, stop yourself, smile politely and say, “I think I’ve answered your question. Second: Take a breath and get back on track. Either way they’ll appreciate your openness.

Method 3 of 5: Weaknesses and Strengths

People always worry about this one. “What if they ask me what my weaknesses are?”
  1. Survive Your Work Placement Step 6.jpg
    1
Change the approach. It’s a bit of a cliché but that’s not to say that this question is never asked. The trick here is to turn your weakness into a positive:
    • “I always lacked confidence so I joined a public speaking course two years ago”
    • “I can be obsessive about detail but a little bit of that can go a long way.”
    • “I sometimes struggle to let go of a project I’ve worked hard on when it’s time to hand over to others”
    • It can be a tight-rope walk answering this sort of question without sounding smarmy so have a good think and make sure your answer really reflects who you are. If your weakness-to-strength story is a real one from your life you will sound sincere and open.

Method 4 of 5: The Final Question

The final question tends to be, “Do you have any questions for us?” This can really throw people.
  1. Prepare a Performance Management Review Step 11.jpg
    1
Think of things to ask. While you were waiting to be called you may have had a look at your surroundings. You could ask: “While I was waiting I noticed that….?”
  2. Perform Well in Interviews Step 14.jpg
    2
You may want to ask a functional question about shift-patterns, uniforms or opening times.
  3. Perform Well in Interviews Step 15.jpg
    3
You may have gleaned some information from the website: “I see you are expanding into…will this be a new focus…?”
  4. Plan for a Second Career Step 2.jpg
    4
You may simply want to ask them when they will be making their decision about the vacancy you are being interviewed for.

Method 5 of 5: Be remembered

  1. Impress Your Much Older Boss Step 9.jpg
    1
Always engage the interviewer/s as you leave: use eye contact and thank them for their time.

Honey:

Honey is one of the best methods of getting fair skin folks. Just get a tea spoon of honey and apply it on your face and massage gently in circular motion. Are you wondering what is this topical medicine now? Topical medicine is something that’s applied externally. So, papaya can rightly be called topical medicine.
Just take a papaya. Peel off the skin and crush the fruit so that it becomes like a thick paste. Apply this paste on your face. You can even use it on your arms (as they get exposed to sun and prone to tan). Allow the paste to be on your face at least for an hour. If you are a person who have no time to concentrate so much, you can simply apply and do your regular work like getting ready for office. After an hour, you can wash off. This process you need to do for at least three months to find the difference.

Believe me, people who used tulasi juice on their skin got relief from all sorts of skin diseases and even noticed that complexion became fair. Therefore, Tulasi juice is now a best remedy to say good bye to sun tan and get fair skin back.
Take a few Tulasi leaves. Grind them with stone and then apply it on your skin gently. Leave it like that for a couple of minutes and then wash the face with luke warm water. Do this for up to three weeks and you will realize the difference within a few weeks.

Now apply this water on face regularly. If possible, whenever you wash your face, you can wash with rose water. Remember not to apply soap when you wash your face with rose water. There are many cases wherein people used rose water and got not just fair complexion but close to pink complexion.

One lemon each time should be sufficient enough. Do like this for at least four to six weeks before you check your face in mirror only for changes in complexion of yuor skin.

How to look Gorgeous While going to a party

How to do wedding/party makeup at home

Want to do wedding/party makeup at home?

So many of us love getting ready for a wedding or a Diwali party or on New Year’s Eve at home. Many of us get confused as to what comes first – eye makeup or foundation, eyeliner or mascara? How to put it all together? This guide is intended to help you in those situations. Hopefully, I have explained the entire look in easy-to-follow steps. So lets get ready for a wedding or party at home!

Step 1: Always begin with skincare and then follow up with foundation

Make sure that you are using your regular moisturizer & allowing it to seep into the skin at least for 15 minutes before moving on to foundation. After moisturizer & before foundation, I would strongly recommend using a face primer. A primer makes your foundation last longer, it acts like a barrier between your skin & foundation & also makes the application of the foundation smooth. Now since you’d need your makeup on for many hours at night (or even during the day), a primer should be applied. Next, apply your choice of foundation – powder, liquid or cream. Make sure that you set the liquid or cream foundation with a loose powder so that your foundation stays put all through!

Step 2: It’s Eye shadow time!

Remember, your eyes should not ‘match’ your outfit. Instead it should ‘compliment’ the colors on your dress. Meaning, use colors that are the opposite of the colors on your dress. The key to applying eye shadow is using a flat eye shadow brush & then using afluffy dome shaped brush to blend. Make sure to apply a darker color in your crease & follow it up with a highlighter up to your brow bone. This softens any harsh lines that may be visible to the naked eye.

Step 3: First comes kajal followed by eyeliner

Apply a black, brown, blue or green colored kajal in the waterline & then line the lash line with black eyeliner. You could use a pencil, gel or liquid liner – whichever you feel convenient to use. If you’d like, add a ‘flick’ at the outer corner of the eye to add some drama. Indian women look great in a winged liner. Never EVER do a smoky eye & a red lip! It’s always ‘smoky eyes with nude lip’ or ‘bright lips with nude/neutral eyes’. Only if you are walking the ramp you can go for ‘smoky eyes & a dark or red lip’! In this case, I would suggest that you do your eye makeup first and then move on to foundation because you are going to have a lot of fall outs from the eye shadow.

Step 4: Time to curl lashes & apply mascara

An eye lash curler is the most underrated makeup product! Just using a curler can make your eyes look ‘awake’! Apply mascara from the roots of the lashes & wiggle the wand in a zig-zag motion till the tip. This will nicely coat the lashes individually & will add definition & volume. Remember, always curl first and then apply mascara. If you do it the other way around, your lashes are going to break!

Step 5: Blush, Contour & Highlight

For a natural looking glow, apply blush on the apples of your cheeks upwards, going into the hairline. The best way to judge where blush needs to be applied is by smiling in the mirror… Use a big fluffy brush to blend the blush on the cheeks. Next, use a brown-matte shade which is 2 shades darker than your skin color to contour your cheeks. This will add structure to your face & will make your face look slimmer in pictures! Suck in your cheekbones, notice the hollows & apply the contouring powder just there & blend! No lines must be visible. It needs to look most natural. To highlight, apply a shimmer blush or powder on the high plains of your face, i.e. the T-zone & cheekbones. The idea of applying a highlighter is simple – when light falls on any of these areas; your skin is going to give out a sheen/glow which looks amazing – especially in photographs.

Step 6: Pucker up

Before you begin with your makeup, make sure that you’ve applied some lip balm. This will keep your lips moist & will allow your lip liner & lipstick to glide on easily. Remove the lip balm with a tissue & line your lips with the help of a lip pencil. I feel that lip liners are brilliant as they act as a base for your lipstick! Fill the entire lip with the pencil & then run the lipstick over. Take a tissue & place it on your lips & run some loose powder with a brush over it. This will make the lipstick matte & will make it last much longer! Next, apply another coat of the lipstick & gently press a tissue over. After doing this, if you eat or drink anything, your lips are going to look as fresh as new!

Step 7: Smile

Now that you’ve followed all the steps, walk with confidence & don’t forget that million dollar smile! Be sure to notice heads turn & people compliment you. If they don’t, they are just jealous :-p Remember, even if you haven’t followed a certain step to the T, no one will notice it if you seem confident & happy!

7 ways to stay healthy this rainy season

Wearing rain boots, drinking tea and washing your hands are ways to stay healthy this rainy season
RAINY DAY BLUES. The monsoon season brings with it diseases and bacteria we need to guard against
MANILA, Philippines - The rainy season may have its charms: the cool weather, the reason to wear jackets and the magnified pleasure of a cup of hot coffee or a bowl of hot soup.
But it has dangers as well, primarily in the form of diseases like dengue and in infectious bacteria and viruses that become active due to the high humidity brought about by repeated spells of rain.
1. Wash your hands
Bacteria and viruses come alive during the monsoon and you can come into contact with them just by crossing the road or holding on to an infected railing or bench.
Wash your hands as frequently as you can with soap and warm water.
2. Don't touch your face
The flu virus commonly enters our body through the eyes, nose and mouth.
Resist the urge to scratch your eye or wipe your sweaty forehead. Bring a clean napkin or handkerchief instead.
3. Protect yourself from dirty water
Clogged gutters and dirty puddles are a common sight during rainy season. Unfortunately, they are sources of water-borne diseases like diarrhea, influenza, cholera and fungal skin infections.
Covering up is the best way to protect yourself from these diseases and still maintain your active life. Aside from a jacket, invest in a good pair of rain boots. In the Philippines, many commuters prefer wearing rubber slippers because, unlike most closed shoes, they dry fast and are easy to move around in.
But slippers leave your feet at the mercy of contaminated elements.
Rain boots are now available for a very cheap price and can be found in a range of styles and designs to suit anyone. They can be taken indoors and stored in lockers or in a bag underneath your office desk.
Rubber ones are light enough to carry in a backpack.
4. Avoid eating street food
While fish ball, kwek kwek and kikiam sold in the streets sound like a good idea any time of the year, the rainy season is when you should stay away from them. Food cooked and sold in the open air are likely to come in contact with airborne and waterborne diseases and bacteria.
Better to eat fresh, home-cooked meals. Why not cook fish balls at home?
5. Keep mosquitoes out
The mosquito population grows during monsoon because stagnant water — their choice breeding ground — becomes more common.
To keep mosquitoes out of your life, do some housecleaning. Look through flower pots, fountains, ditches, nooks and crannies that may be holding stagnant water. Clean them out and cover them until the end of the season.
Slather mosquito repellent over your body, especially when you go outdoors.
6. Drink herbal tea
Herbal tea has curative properties for coughs, colds and sore throat — common ailments during the rainy season.
To make it extra good for your body (not to mention pleasant and delicious), you can add body warming ingredients like cloves, ginger, pepper, basil and mint.
7. Make eucalyptus oil your best friend
The aroma of eucalyptus oil helps us breathe easily; this, in turn, relaxes the entire body. This substance can be your best friend during the rainy season when the nose gets clogged from flu and the body is maxed out from other diseases or even when dealing with just the extra strain of commuting in the rain.
There are several ways to breathe in its healing and calming aroma. You can dilute it in water and use it to steam your face.
